Nick Cave and the Sad Soundtracks

When I saw the first half of the last Harry Potter movie, I was delighted to recognize a classic song from one of my favorite artists: Nick Cave. So it got me to thinking, what other soundtracks or scores have his songs been on? Turns out, the library has a few! The Road was a bleak favorite. Follow the break for more info.
So Nick Cave's first band, The Birthday Party, was an unpopular but memorable band in the 70s and early 80s in Australia. When they disbanded, he and one of his bandmates joined up with some new blood to form Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, which has been making dark, disturbing music for decades since. I'd describe it as somewhere in between gothic and folk, and if you're a fan of singer-songwriters with, er, less-than-pristine voices, like Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, or Leonard Cohen, you'd probably enjoy Cave.

Anyway, it turns out that if you search our catalog for Nick Cave, his songs have appeared on soundtracks as unexpected as Batman Forever, Friends, and Shrek. Although we don't have the Wings of Desire soundtrack that he's featured on, we do have the classic movie for you to check out -- trust me, there's more to it than just a great soundtrack!

If you'd like to hear some of his work outside of movie soundtracks, we do have some tracks available for you to download from Freegal, including a number with his long-time collaborator Warren Ellis (not to be confused with the writer named Warren Ellis, who's one of the grumpiest people on Twitter, and author of the excellent Crooked Little Vein). Or you could explore his work on free sites like Pandora, LastFM, YouTube, or at your favorite record store -- if you go that route, my favorite albums of his are Kicking Against the Pricks, Murder Ballads, and Nocturama.

Oh, and this really has nothing to do with Nick Cave, but don't forget to stop by SummerQuest and comment with your craft challenge to unlock the next part of the image!

Happy listening (and crafting!),
Jenny
