Marooned : the next generation of desert island discs

Imagine that you are stranded on a desert island. You have plenty of shelter, food, and no worries in the world. Now, what music do you wish to keep you entertained in this sudden paradise? This is the age old question and if you are anything like me, that list is constantly changing as you broaden your horizons year by year and discover new music that is unforgettable. I just finished the wonderful book Marooned : The next generation of desert island discs and I am eager to share this fun little book.
The book is a compilation of different writers essays on which albums would be their "desert island picks". First we have Motorhead's "No Remorse" by Phil Freeman.  Followed by Skunk Anasie's "Stoosh" by Laina Dawes.  Next is My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless" by Ned Raggett.  Then there is Various Artists- "History Of Our World Part 1: Breakbeat and jungle ultramix by Michaelangelo Matos.  Divine Styler's " Spiral Walls Containing Autumns Of Light" by Scott Seward.  John Martyn's "Solid Air" by Simon Reynolds.  Alice Coltrane's "Journey In Satchidananda"  by Geeta Dayal.   Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew" by Greg Tate.   The Scorpions' "Virgin Killer" by Dave Queen.   Stereolab's "Transient random noisebursts with announcements" by Douglas Wouk.  Spiritualized's "Ladies and gentlemen, we are floating in space" by Daphne Carr.  Dionne Warwick's "Legends" by John Darnielle.  Elton John's "Goodbye yellow brick road" by Matt Ashare.  Dio "Anthology" by Anthony Miccio.  The Meters "The Meters" by Jeff Chang.  Stephen Stills' "Manassas" by Kandia Crazy Horse.  Brand Nubian's "One For All"  by Tom Breihan.  The Cars' "The Cars" by Rob Harvilla.  Sonny Rollins' "A night At The Village Vanguard" by Derek Taylor.  Iron Maiden "Killers" by Ian Christie.
For me, my personal desert island discs would include: The Police "Synchronicity", "Ghost In The Machine", and well, every single Police recording ever made. I would like all of Sting's recordings as well. Especially "The Soul Cages". Pearl Jam's "Yield". Mazzy Star's "So Tonight That I Might See".  Kate Bush "The Sensual World". Patti Smith's "Land".  Sinead O'connor's "The Lion And The Cobra". Radiohead's "The Bends" and "OK Computer". Tori Amos's "Under The Pink". Sonic Youth's "Experimental Jet Set Trash And No Star". Nirvana's "In Utero". Bjork's "Debut". The Beastie Boys' "Check Your Head".  The Smith's "Self titled first record"  and "The Queen Is Dead".  Roxy Music's "Avalon"Soundgarden's "Superunknown". Beck's "Odelay".  Concrete Blonde's "Bloodletting".  Beastie Boys "Ill Communication" and "Check Your Head".  Sinead O'Connor "I do not want what I haven't Got".  Tori Amos "From The Choirgirl Hotel". Morrissey's "Viva Hate".  Pearl Jam "Vitalogy". Stone Temple Pilots "Core".  The Cure " Disintegration".  The Sundays "Blind", "Reading Writing and Arithmetic" and  "Static and Silence".
The Stone Roses "Turns In to Stone" and "Second Coming". Oasis  "What's The Story Morning Glory?"  Marcy Playground "Marcy Playground". Bruce Springsteen "Born In the USA"  and "Greatest Hits".    MTV'S 120 Minutes vol. 1 and 2 and 120 Minutes live.  The Smashing Pumpkins "Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness".
I hope that you give the book a try and please feel free to comment with your own desert island choices underneath. Enjoy.

Fred
