So get this, Cyndi Lauper's upcoming June 23rd show at Tucson's Fox Theater takes place one day after she turns 60 years old. How is this possible? Still, despite her advancing years, according to the name of the tour, she is Still So Unusual. Read on for more information on her career and her most recent album Memphis Blues.
Truth be told, I was not much of a fan of 1983's smash hit "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." I was a boy after all, and the song just didn't speak to me. However, the other singles off She's So Unusual are songs which I still enjoy. "Time After Time," "She Bop," "Money Changes Everything," and "All Through the Night" were all hits that folks still seek out ("Time After Time" has almost 18 million Youtube hits).
Her next album True Colors contained her second #1 hit, "True Colors," which is possibly among my favorite pop songs ever. Following these albums Lauper's career slowed down considerably (I did really like the 1993 single "That's What I Think"). Her most recent album is 2010's Memphis Blues. According to Wikipedia, "It debuted on the Billboard Blues Album Chart at No. 1, and it debuted on Billboard's Top 200 Albums Chart at No. 26. The album remained No. 1 on the Billboard Blues Album Chart for 14 consecutive weeks." The album features Charlie Musselwhite, Allen Toussaint, B.B. King, and Johnny Lang, and it is quite good (when it comes up on my shuffle, I check to see who it is, and I am always pleasantly surprised to see that it is current Cyndi Lauper and that I am enjoying it).
Lauper's latest endeavor is composing the music for the Broadway musical Kinky Boots. This has proven a successful project, as the musical has been nominated for 13 Tony Awards, including Best Original Score. While her 60th birthday show takes place in Phoenix, she will likely still be feeling the glow the following evening for her June 23rd show in Tucson, so it should be a good one!
