Have you ever purchased tickets to see a band that you haven't listened to in 10, 20, even 30 years? For me there is always a mix of emotions. If you want to know all about the Psychedelic Furs' history, read Gene Armstrong's article in last week's Tucson Weekly. I'm just going to talk about feelings.
I won't tell you about the sad shows, where the old performers try to recreate their youth, playing the same old songs in the same old way. When I saw Joan Jett perform at the Pima County Fair several years ago, I felt a little trepidation. How can this be good - a once-famous rocker, playing at a county fair in the dusty desert? I was pleasantly surprised when Jett put on a show that felt current, relevant and genuine. Sure - she played my old favorites, but she did so in a graceful, mature way that still rocked!
Which brings me back to the Psychedelic Furs show at the Rialto on Thursday at 8:00. I bought the tickets a few months ago - not because they were my favorite band or because I have listened to them all these years. I bought them because one of the first conversations I had with my husband, before I really even knew him, was about the Psychedelic Furs. We were at a party and I had just put a Psychedelic Furs record on the turntable. As I was looking at the album cover, my future husband joined me, striking up a conversation about the Furs. It was definitely a memorable moment.
I do not know what to expect from this show. Of course, I hope to hear some of my old faves like "India" and "President Gas," but maybe after all these years, it is best to go in with no expectations at all. I will just enjoy the show with the cute dark-haired guy, whose hair is not so dark anymore.
Sandy
