On her own, Foxes has released a string of amazing singles on par with the best of Lorde,Florence & the Machine and Feist. Besides their amazing voices, Foxes shares many similarities with these other singers. Like Florence (of the Machine variety), Foxes' lyrics often drift into the realm of mysticism. In "Beauty Queen" Foxes muses, "There’s a house in the forest/Where her days are forgotten/By the lake, she dropped her dreams/Now they've sunk to the bottom." In Echo, "Running in a crypt of a thousand words/Hiding in the dark when violence starts."
Like Feist, Foxes lets her instrumentation enhance her vocals, not drown them in sound. Pleasant keyboards, tapping drums, tinkling strings...whether the sound is soft rock goodness or drifts into ethereal realms, Foxes’ voice is always the centerpiece of song.
And like Lorde, Foxes' best track "Youth" is one that celebrates young life through a lens of reserved wisdom. "Don't tell me our youth is running out/It's only just begun" she pleads at the end of the song, after opening with the cautionary "They didn't warn me/When I was running wild/The dragons breathing fire in the backyard." It is a song of pounding drums and soaring lyrics, a beautiful track that will be considered her early masterpiece.
(And for those of you who like a little dubstep in their lives, Freegal offers the Adventure Club remix of “Youth” to spice up your next dance party).
There is no reason why Foxes will not be the next big female artist in the upcoming year. She has the ambition, voice, and genre-crossing appeal to be the next international superstar. Happy listening!
