A Light That Never Goes Out: Morrissey's Autobiography
I have always been a huge fan of Morrissey. The king of intellectual alternative rock. I did prefer his work with The Smiths as opposed to his solo work. Because Morrissey is the enigmatic character that he has always been, I was eager to learn everything I could about him and analyze every lyric that he had ever written. He has always been notoriously strange, private, asexual, and sarcastic, while blessed with a razor sharp intellect that I believe could only be rivaled by Sting. Finally there is an official autobiography on the life of one music's most interesting artists. Please read on to learn more...
Steven Patrick Morrissey was born May 22 1959 in Davyhulme, Lancashire England to parents Peter and Elizabeth. Fun Fact: His mother Elizabeth was a librarian! Young Morrissey grew up on the bookish side and found his musical interests in Sandie Shaw, Marianne Faithfull,Billy Fury and The New York Dolls. He was equally drawn to entertainers like James Dean, Oscar Wilde, and Shelagh Delaney.
He eventually fronted the group The Nosebleeds who included Billy Duffy from The Cult. Around the same time, he also founded a fan club for The Cramps. In 1982, he met guitarist extraordinaire Johnny Marr and the two immediatley hit it off and began a musical partnership. Soon after Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke joined on drums and bass. In 1987, after an enormously successful career, The Smiths ended their run and broke up. The following year Morrissey began a successful solo career.
I was very unsure how to feel about the book as I was reading. Since I had grown up idolizing Morrissey, over the years I had become aware of the story of his life. So as a result, the book was a bit boring and familiar. That said, this book is PERFECT for those just discovering Morrissey. I decided not to fill this post with any spoilers or giveaways for those who have not read the book. I would've loved to have read more about the realtionship between Morrissey and Smith's guitarist Johnny Marr. His opinions on his contemporaries in the world of alternative music would've been interesting to hear about. And more about his love for animals.
The book is defintley worth a read especially if you are unaware of his work.

Enjoy and thank you for reading.
