 CBGB was a club in New York in the late 70's that put The Ramones, Joe Jackson, Patti Smith, The Talking Heads,  The Police, The B-52'S and Blondie on the map. Sometime in the early 90's I watched a horror film called "Fear No Evil" that was made in 1981 and featured music by all of aforementioned musicians above.  This is how I discovered the CBGB music scene and it was truly an awakening experience on my 12 year old brain. Ever since then I have had a huge admiration for this time in music evolution that rocketed the first wave of alternative music into the mainstream.  Last year, a film on the CBGB scene was released. Return of LET'S GO RETRO

Retro: Definition: denoting something associated with or revived from the past: retro dressing ; retro fashion

Prepare to travel back in time with a few modern musicians. I'm looking for artists who embody and sing and play music in the spirit of yesteryear- from crooning lounge singers, jazz singers to rockabilly bop of the 50s.
Put on your poodle skirt and dust off your blue suede shoes!

Diana Krall recorded a Nat King Cole tribute album and records jazz music with the spirit of Tony Bennett and Ella Fitzgerald in her soulful songs. She recently released the album "Glad Rag Doll" and has a large selection of music that will transport you back into time, in another era. Her popularity is recognized- two Grammy awards and 6 million albums sold. Her music sounds like you have walked into a lounge in the 1940's- at least, how I imagine it, or have seen it in movies and standard albums of yesteryear.

War Child Presents: Heroes (An Album To Benefit Children Affected By War)

The library recently acquired a wonderful new benefit compilation album entitled  War Child Presents: Heroes(An Album To Benefit Children Affected By War).  The purpose of the album is to bring awareness to the enormous amount of children who in some way have been affected by the brutality of war. This CD is loaded with excellent musicians all providing covers of classic bands. Read on to learn more about the album.

The Encyclopedia Of New Wave

If you have read any of my previous posts, you have probably noticed that I am a huge new wave connoisseur. If you enjoy new wave you have got to check out one of the library's recent acquisitions The Encyclopedia Of New Wave by Daniel Bukszpan. It is a solid who's who companion of many of the strongest acts of new wave rock who paved the way for what the world would eventually define as "alternative rock".

The ABC'S Of Rock!

Here is a little treat for those of you who have children and would like to get them interested in rock music at an early age. The ABC'S Of Rock by Melissa Duke Mooney and The Print Mafia is a dynamite little picture book that has an A-Z listing of some of Rock music's finest talent.
