El domingo el NYT publicó un excelente artículo sobre Alan Lomax, quien quizá es el etnomusicólogo y coleccionista de música tradicional más conocido en EE.UU. El artículo ofrece una breve semblanza de su vida y sus contribuciones ahora que el sello Global Jukebox ofrecerá gratis y en línea 17,000 piezas de su colección a fin de conmemorar el 97mo. Aniversario de su nacimiento.
Si prefieres escuchar música desde tu estéreo revisa los CDs de su colección que tiene la biblioteca en nuestro catálogo. También tenemos Alan Lomax: The Man Who Recorded the World, una muy buena biografía escrita por John Szwed y publicada en 2010.
Hablaré sobre títulos específicos de Lomax en el futuro. Por ahora, quiero mencionar que en sus primeros momentos tanto el folclore como la etnomusicología no tenían un impulso coleccionista. Su principal objetivo era documentar expresiones culturales tradicionales. Lomax tuvo la visión no sólo de usar la tecnología de grabación para preservarlas (como hizo su padre) sino para también diseminarlas. Dicha visión habría de tener una influencia gigantesca en la música popular.
