This weekend, head to 4th Avenue and downtown to enjoy live music on over 25 stages. The Tucson Weekly's Spring Club Crawl on Saturday, April 21st once again features a wide variety of Tucson musicians, as well as some out-of-towners. A few years ago, I saw Elmo Kirkwood from Phoenix with his band Kirkwood Dellinger. I was impressed with the multi-talented band members, switching instruments every few songs. I look forward to hearing Kirkwood, son of Meat Puppets' Curt Kirkwood, playing solo at 11:00.
As for local bands, it is always tough to decide which bands to see. I have not heard Funky Bonz since before their extended hiatus a few years ago, so that is my top choice for 9:00 pm, but will I also have time to see Loren Dirks at 9:30? At 10:00, how do you choose between The Wyatts, Cosmic Slop and Blind Divine? In previous years, I have tried to see two bands in the same hour, but navigating the crowds and waiting in line takes up too much time for me to really appreciate more than one act per hour. I have been enjoying Al Perry's music since he was playing with the Cattle, so for old times' sake, I will be listening to Al Perry at midnight.
There's something for everyone - an outside Tejano stage, DJs on the Hub roof and acoustic music in some of the smaller venues. You can also enjoy belly dancing and Flam Chen will be performing all night. Of course, the best way to support local music is to go out and listen all year, but it's fun to get out to these big events and mingle with thousands of other Tucsonans. Check out this week's issue of the Tucson Weekly for all the details. Have fun!
Sandy
