Dropkick Murphys

The makers of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups may tell you that peanut butter and chocolate is the perfect combination, but really, the perfect combination is when you mix a little punk with your Celtic music.

On April 12, I saw Dropkick Murphys at The Rialto. The Murphys are one of my favorite bands right now. I love that combination of driving punk guitar with bagpipes, whistles and mandolin. I was not disappointed.

After the opening band, the lights went down and a recorded version of "The Foggy Dew" by Sinead O'Connor and The Chieftains set the stage. There's nothing like a good Irish revolutionary song to stir your soul and get you in the mood for some Irish punk.

They started off with "The Boys Are Back," the first track on their new album Signed and Sealed in Blood. I'm not an expert reviewer, so I didn't take notes listing each song they played. I can tell you that the next few songs were classic raucous Murphys songs that you want to sing (or yell) along with, including "Going Out in Style," "God Willing," and "Your Spirit's Alive." In fact, part of the Murphys experience is singing along and it was highly encouraged by the band.

Thanks to a Captain Morgan commercial, many TV viewers have been introduced to "Prisoners Song," a song reminiscent of "Shipping Up to Boston." They played both of these great songs.

A Murphys' show would not be complete without songs that references Boston sports teams."Jimmy Collins Wake" goes way back to the first manager of the Boston Red Sox. I have listened to the new song "Rose Tattoo" enough times to know that they are talking about the Boston Bruins when they sing, "This one's for our favorite game, Black and gold, we wave the flag."

I love the Murphys' version of any classic Irish song. No disrespect to The Dubliners or The Pogues, but nobody sounds like they are having as much fun when they play "The Irish Rover"as the Dropkick Murphys.

My favorite moment of the night is when young women started climbing up on the stage during "The End of the Night." It was not quite the end of the night. They played a few more songs, including AC/DC's T.N.T., but I like to think the show ended with all of those beautiful ladies singing and dancing with the Murphys, having as much fun as the boys in the band. The Boys are Back indeed!
