Graham Nash: Howard Stern Interview

Graham Nash: Wild Tales

Last month I listened to a wonderful segment on The Howard Stern Show in which he interviewed Graham Nash to promote his new biography which the library now owns. For over an hour, Mr. Nash, w/ his guitar in hand, shared a very endearing lecture on the fantastic musical world that he lived in and witnessed. He played over 6 songs and talked about meeting The Beatles, to leaving The Hollies, to forming Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, to explaining why Joni Mitchell was the love of his life. This was one of the finest interviews I've heard in a long time. Keep reading to learn more.

Howard Stern is a master interviewer. Though controversial and unliked by many, he sure knows how to conduct an engaging interview while getting the subject to become comfortable and open up about their best stories. In the past month, Howard Stern had both Paul McCartney and Graham Nash on the show. While McCartney was only able to do a 30 minute interview, Mr. Nash stayed for over an hour serenading the staff and audience with wonderful songs and stories from his youth. All of which he discusses in his new book.

He reflects on his time with The Hollies and that it was a good start for him but was also very confining and the rest of the band was unwilling to try any of the different and ambitious sounds he was experimenting with. He was struck by what The Beatles, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones were doing and wanted to evolve like them.

He went into great description about his huge love for Joni Mitchell (coincidentally today is her birthday). They really had a love affair that was beautiful and fantastic that most classical love stories pale in comparison. He refers to Ms. Mitchell as his soul mate and it is truly sad that it ultimately did not work out.

Mr. Nash mentioned attending parties in the Laurel Canyon area that were attended by Bob Dylan, The Stones, Johnny Cash, Joan Baez amongst many others. At these parties they would do incredible things like having to sing for their dinner and the aforementioned  stars would end up amazing everyone with brilliant impromptu sessions.

I really do not want to give too much away. The book and interview are truly remarkable and I highly recommend.  The entire interview is on youtube. Just search Howard Stern Show: Graham Nash Interview 10/01/13.

Thank you for reading and enjoy.
