Reid Park ZHU

Let's talk about two very important topics: the new baby elephant at Reid Park Zoo, Nandi, and LA electronic producer ZHU (marvel at the shaky "zoo" connection I'm forcing into this post). First things first: how cute is that baby elephant? Take a look at her picture and feel your worries slip away: "Baby Elephant Cuteness Overload." The rest of the world also loves this little rascal; a video of little Nandi blowing bubbles made it to the top spot on mega-website Reddit a few weeks back!

But since this is a music blog, let's discuss ZHU. The secretive artist came into the electronic scene this year like a cloud of smoke, doing the remarkable feat of staying (halfway) anonymous in the internet age. ZHU wants his music, not personal life, to define his image, and has given fans a stunning first EP to back up this vision.

The Nightday, available now through Freegal, is ZHU's stunning debut. The six tracks encapsulate the feeling of a night on the town: the press of bodies, intoxicating beats, and dim lighting to cover the grime and filth of the scene. Take lead single, Faded, a mercurial track built upon repeated lyrics: "Baby I'm wasted/all I want to do is drive home to you/baby I'm faded/all I want to do is take you downtown." The synth and bass pulse as the vocalist morphs from forlorn lover to ghastly stalker in equal measure.

The following track, Paradise Awaits, puts a twisted spin on the upbeat club banger formula. Under a snappy beat, the vocalist proclaims, "I'm born with a mighty sin/I need to be your lover/I need to be your king." Just pray you don't run into this narcissistic mess this weekend! Superfriends is carried by a hypnotic beat and the line: "We can get a group of 10s/we could be superfriends." After all, isn't this why you go out on the weekends?

ZHU seems content to delve straight into the world of nightlife and clubbing with The Nightday, creating tracks that analyze night culture but will embraced by the club scene at the same time. Final track Cocaine Model showcases the lifestyles of the young, beautiful, and drugged: "She told me she was from Morocco/by the way of South Chicago...Private jets on her parents/Asked me if I want to roll." Sleezy, fun.
