I have posted about Kate Bush before, but she is so awesome that she requires more than just one post. During one of my catalog searches looking for good blogging material, I was overjoyed to discover that the library owns the biography of Kate Bush: Under The Ivy. Sid And Nancy: Love Kills

"In the late 70's, when I was living in Los Angeles,  there was a strange double murder/suicide in New York.  Sid Vicious, a pop singer, was arrested for the murder of his fiancĂ©e, Nancy Spungen.  He committed suicide before he could be brought to trial.  They were both junkies and their lives were pretty bleak.  But why take things to such extremes?  I don't know.  Never mind the bollocks. Watch the film."
-Alex Cox (Director of Sid and Nancy)

I was delighted to find that the library owns the soundtrack to the 1986 cult classic Sid and Nancy. An alluring and tragic look at the initial meeting, relationship and ultimate deaths of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his other half Nancy Spungen.

A Los Angeles Kind of Mood

Hole, Celebrity Skin: I played this constantly in 1998, and I recently rediscovered it after a prolonged absence. The recent arson fires in L.A. made me think of the title track and the album as a whole. Why? The album has a sunshiny, shimmering vibe, along the lines of the Beach Boys and the Go-Go's; fun (and at times almost pretty) melodies and harmonies that make you wish you were in a convertible singing along. But at the same time, with the razor-edged guitars and the lyrics you're reminded that so much of what we see is artifice and that sometimes the most beautiful things in life have a very ugly side to them and a very short shelf life, and are easily destroyed...maybe much like L.A. itself.
