Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk at Hotel Congress 3/14/2012

Dumpstaphunk brought their New Orleans brand of Funk music to the Hotel Congress on Wednesday March 14, 2012.  The band did not disappoint the many fans who came out for the show.  The Hotel Congress stage is adorned with the Latin words "musica delenit bestiam feram," which means, "music soothes the savage beast."  As for this night, the way the crowd danced up a frenzy with Dumpstaphunk, this proved not to be the case!

You can find some great New Orleans music, including songs by both The Neville Brothers and The Meters on Pima County Public Library's CD Mardi Gras Essentials.  Both bands also have works in Freegal, available under the Downloadable Media heading on our home page.  To find out more about Dumpstaphunk, their show at Hotel Congress, and their connection to these classic New Orleans bands, please read on.

Local band "Amosphere" opened the show in fine fashion, lead by multi-instrumentalist Amo.  The band had a driving  funk sound, which shared some of the same dance-heavy, groove-based sounds of Dumpstaphunk, while having an entirely different feel.  I look forward to seeing this local band again.

Dumpstaphunk was formed by keyboardist and vocalist Ivan Neville in 2003.  The band plays a style of Jazz known as Funk, with heavy bass and a beat meant for moving one's body.  Ivan is part of a great New Orleans family of musicians, son of vocalist Aaron Neville (member of The Neville Brothers Band, and known for his singing on various popular tunes, among them hits with native Tucsonan Linda Ronstadt).  Ivan has had an expansive musical career playing with all manner of well-known talent.  He was even in a band with Keith Richards, called The X-Pensive Winos.

Dumpstaphunk's rhythm guitarist is Ian Neville, Ivan's cousin, and son of Funk great Art Neville (keyboardist for the seminal New Orleans Funk band The Meters).  The band has not one, but two stellar bass players in Nick Daniels and Tony Hall.  Drummer Nikki Glaspie, new to the band since I last saw them a couple of years ago, was amazing on the kit.  Formerly the drummer for Beyonce's tours, Nikki has jumped right in with Dumpstaphunk, playing an inspired set, including a drum solo with rhythms fresher and more musical than I ever knew drums could even play.  She is the only non-New Orleanian in the band, coming from Maryland and educated at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

The band came out strong and continued to impress throughout the evening, playing original material and a few covers.  They played their own funky take on "Liar" by Three Dog Night, and a great version of "Fame" by David Bowie.  The crowd showed support throughout the night with constant dancing and energetic cheers.  Let's hope more bands from New Orleans make their way to Tucson, after all, both places have I-10 running through the middle of town, so it is a one highway road trip!

Cheers, Brian
