Suffer for Fashion: Of Montreal Live

Back in March, I caught Of Montreal at the Rialto Theater, one of my favorite local venues. They played to a very diverse crowd: it was fun to see young ravers be-glowsticked and covered in sequins navigating a less-hip and more-jaded, almost-sold-out space.

The live show was bizarre and circus-like. I had to close the library, so I missed the first opening act, but Deerhoof's cacophonous noise was a perfect thing to set the mood. By the time Of Montreal took the stage, the Rialto was crammed to the gills and the crowd was so hyped that, packed too tight to dance, they jiggled and waved their hands like glowing sea-creatures throughout. The entire band dressed identically, except for frontman Kevin Barnes. A number of large TV screens broadcast different surreal graphics for every song. Bodysuited acrobats kept doing strange things to keep us guessing: at various points, they waved wings behind Barnes, dumped balloons on the audience, did strange dances, and crowdsurfed.

My favorite thing about them is the way their dark, cerebral lyrics, reminiscent of Pulp, undermine their aggressively dance-y, upbeat pop sound, that could easily fit in at a nightclub or party. Seeing them live really highlighted this aspect -- there was nothing like watching the crowd bounce balloons in time to suicidal lyrics.

Curious to hear them? Aside from the three albums the library owns (just click on the picture of their newest album in the top corner for a link), we also have a few free download tracks available on our Freegal service.

Happy listening!
