Found Magazine + Rasputina Visiting Tucson

After catching the hilarious Found Footage Festival at the Loft recently, I'm really excited for more peeks into the weird private moments of America, at the Found Magazine tour coming to Club Congress Saturday, October 20th. They often choose great musicians to accompany their show (the last time they were in town, it was the Watson Twins), and this time, one of my favorite (and equally weird) bands, Rasputina, is joining them.

Plus, on the following Sunday, October 21st, the Found Magazine folks are going to stop by Main Library at 2pm for a free matinee performance sponsored by, that's right, the coolest public library in Pima County. (The Sunday show will be minus Rasputina and some of the more risqué content). Read on for more info about Found Magazine and Rasputina!

Found Magazine collects all kinds of artifacts submitted by ordinary people all over the country. As they explain on their website:
"We collect found stuff: love letters, birthday cards, kids’ homework, to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, doodles– anything that gives a glimpse into someone else’s life. Anything goes."
When I worked at Bookmans, one of my coworkers found a postcard tucked into a book that he got published for posterity. The library owns several of their collections, and you still have plenty of time before the show to check them out -- as slices of life, they run the gamut from hilarious to vulgar to heartbreaking.

The thing that I really like about their live show, though, is that it is a true performance. The found messages are displayed, acted out, read aloud, and celebrated. Yes, humanity is pretty weird and sometimes you just have to giggle at the silly things we do, but in the end, going to one of their shows makes you feel pretty good about the human race. At least we can laugh at ourselves!

Afterwards, Rasputina, the one and only cello goth rock band, will perform. If you don't think three girls with cellos can rock, think again. Plus, as a confirmed nerd, I love that a lot of their songs are based on history -- often really weird, dark things in history, like Howard Hughes' descent into madness, and the Donner Party. As fun as it is to listen to their recorded songs, getting the spontaneous, live experience with patter and surprise covers is definitely worthwhile. If you'd like to check them out beforehand, we have a pretty extensive selection available for your three-downloads-per-week pleasure over on Freegal.

Happy listening (and reading/gawking!),
Jenny
