Loving the Local Music Scene

I'm still floating from the great time I had at the Tucson Folk Festival last weekend - so much so that even though I typically write about books I was inspired to write about music! If you have never been, this event is held the first weekend in May every year downtown - this year expanded to 5 different stages ranging from the Courtyard of the Pima County Courthouse to the main Plaza stage, over to La Cocina and then two stages at the Art Museum. The entire event is free - an entire weekend, at least 8 hours each day of fabulous free music - almost, but not quite music overload.  More details can be found by searching for Tucson Kitchen Musicians Association on the web.

There were so many times I had to choose between two (or even three) bands or else I chose to just race around and tried to catch at least two songs from each set. Since I had to work on Saturday, I only was able to catch the evening shows.  But starting at 5:30 I had to choose between The Determined Luddites (full disclosure, I am married to one of those Luddites) and Nowhere Man and a Whiskey Girl (Amy's voice is a dream and I don't understand why they're not national yet). At 6, it was a choice between the great harmonica playing in Ice-9 and Heather "Lil' Mama" Hardy. And at 6:30 there were three choices - Kevin Pakulis (luckily he's playing at Second Saturdays this week), The Tryst and Stuart Oliver and the Desert Angels. I won't even get into Sunday, but suffice to say I had to make similar hard choices all day long.
Luckily there are so many opportunities to see fantastic free local music, and 2nd Saturdays, happening downtown this Saturday May 11th, is just one of those times.  Check out the stage on Scott where I'll be catching the Kevin Pakulis set I missed last weekend.  In addition, Michael P. and the Mighty Joel Ford will be playing over with Heather Hardy and Sabra Faulk at the Dragonfly Gallery located at 146 E. Broadway.
Whew, just the tip of the iceberg - I haven't even talked about Jazz Telephone playing at Sky Bar on Tuesday night. Do yourself a favor and check out the great bands that we have in town, support our local music scene and as they say at Meet Me at Maynards every Monday - Get Out!

  1. I was happy to catch Ryanhood at the Folk Festival. I have never heard them live and I was so impressed by their guitar playing and harmonies.
